Understanding Reading Difficulties: Linking Assessment to Instruction

Dear iReading Tutor Families,

The last few issues of our newsletter have focused on important topics such as social-emotional learning and the “summer slide.” We encourage you to revisit those editions to continue learning about ways to support children’s academic growth, emotional well-being, and long-term success. These topics remain especially important as students continue to build confidence, independence, and positive learning habits both in and outside of school.

This month, we would like to highlight another meaningful way our practice supports students and families: educational webinars. Webinars provide an opportunity for us to connect with a broader audience and share valuable knowledge and resources with parents, guardians, caregivers, educators, and tutors. Through these virtual sessions, we are able to discuss important educational topics, explain effective strategies, answer common questions, and provide practical tools that families can use to support learning at home.

Our webinars cover a variety of topics. Our two most recent webinars provided our audience with a simulation of what it would be like to be dyslexia (Dyslexia Simulation) and our second Understanding Reading Difficulties: Linking Assessment to instruction.

These sessions are designed to be informative, accessible, and supportive for families and professionals alike. We have included links to our webinars in this newsletter and encourage you to take some time to watch, learn, and explore the resources available.

Whether you are looking for new strategies to support your child, deepen your understanding of learning and development, or gain insight into evidence-based practices, we hope these webinars provide helpful guidance and encouragement.

Summer is right around the corner—and for some students, it has already begun! While summer is a time for rest, fun, and new experiences, it is also important to continue supporting your child’s reading and writing skills. Consistent practice, even in small ways, can help prevent the “summer slide” and keep learning fresh and engaging.

Check out the graphic below for simple and enjoyable ideas to help your child continue building literacy skills throughout the summer months. From reading together and journaling to playing word games and writing postcards, there are many easy ways to make learning part of everyday summer activities.
