Understanding ESE, Dysgraphia & Reading Support | iReading Tutor

Updated: 11 hours ago

Dear iReading Tutor Families,

We're excited to continue sharing our weekly newsletter with you, focusing on all things literacy. iReading tutoring utilizes the science of reading methodologies, Orton-Gillingham structured literacy methodologies.

Understanding your child's needs and knowing how we can support them is an important part of helping our iReading TUTOR children succeed.

Many families ask, “What do I do if my child is struggling? How do I make sure my child gets what he/she needs?” This week, we're explaining the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) process and what to expect.

ESE provides extra support to help students with learning differences or disabilities thrive. As a parent, you are a key member of the team, working alongside teachers, school psychologists, and district staff to make decisions about your child's learning. The ultimate goal of ESE is to give your child the tools and support they need to learn, grow, and succeed.

Similar to last month, we're highlighting another disability, dysgraphia, and its impact on reading and writing. Early identification helps families understand their child's needs, access the right support, and use research-based interventions during key developmental periods—setting the stage for long-term success.

Remember: You are a vital member of the ESE team.

Come to meetings prepared—bring notes on your child’s strengths, challenges, and progress.

Ask for clear explanations if anything is confusing, and request examples of how accommodations or modifications will look in the classroom. Keep copies of reports and track progress over time.

Remember, your voice matters.

Your involvement truly makes a difference in your child’s learning and growth.

Understanding Dysgraphia

Dysgraphia is a learning difference that makes it difficult for a child to write letters and numbers neatly and automatically. It can also affect fine motor control and executive functioning skills such as planning and organizing written work. Because of these challenges, dysgraphia can impact multiple components of literacy, including the areas noted above.
